Cards issued to adults before January 2, 2004
These documents, in cardboard format, had a validity of ten years. No extension applies. They are all expired today.
Cards issued to adults between January 2, 2004, and December 31, 2013
Initially valid for ten years, these secure laminated cards benefit from an automatic five-year extension, bringing their total validity to fifteen years without action from the holder. The printed end date on the document has therefore passed, but the document remains legally valid in France.
Cards issued from January 1, 2014
For adults, the validity is directly set at fifteen years from issuance. For minors, it remains at ten years. This distinction persists with the new 2022 format.
Automatic extension of the CNI: the trap abroad
The five-year extension decided by France in 2014 remains a source of concrete difficulties during travel. The problem is simple: the expiration date printed on the card no longer corresponds to the actual validity of the document. However, several countries do not recognize this extension.
The Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs regularly updates the list of states accepting or refusing extended cards. We recommend checking this list before any travel, as it evolves without notice.
- Some EU member states accept cards whose face date has passed, provided the extension is verifiable.
- Other countries, including in Europe, categorically refuse any document with an expired printed date, regardless of French legislation.
- Some airlines and travel agencies refuse boarding for travelers carrying an “extended” card to avoid any risk of being turned away at the destination.
A document valid under French law can be refused abroad. This asymmetry means that, in doubt, it is better to renew the card before traveling rather than relying on the administrative extension.
Early renewal of the identity card: legal and practical deadlines at the town hall
The request for renewal of a CNI can be submitted up to six months before the expiration date of the current document. This deadline applies to both the identity card and the passport.
A notable change has recently occurred: the new identity card in the 2022 format can now be requested even before the expiration of the old one, without the town hall requiring any particular justification. This evolution breaks with the previous practice where some town halls asked for a “reason” (imminent travel, change of civil status) to accept an early renewal.
Anticipating processing times
Manufacturing times vary significantly depending on the time of year and the relevant prefecture. We observe peaks in requests before each summer period, which can extend processing times to several weeks.

- The identity photo must meet current standards (format, background, expression). A non-compliant photo results in the rejection of the application and a new appointment.
Validity of the identity card for traveling in Europe and outside the EU
The CNI allows travel throughout the European Union and in certain third countries that accept it as a travel document. This right does not depend on the format (old or new) but on the effective validity of the document at the time of crossing the border.
For cards extended for five years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes a country-by-country list. Some require that the card be valid for at least three months after the expected return date, while others only require validity covering the duration of the stay.
The transition to the credit card format with an electronic chip is gradually simplifying the situation. Automated readers at borders read the component directly, making the printed date less decisive in the long run. As long as the old format remains in circulation, the confusion between administrative validity and operational validity persists.
In light of these disparities, the most reliable solution remains to hold an identity card whose face date has not expired, or to travel with a valid passport when the destination is not covered by the official list of countries accepting the extension.
